Subluxation

What Is a Subluxation?

A subluxation is a condition that occurs when a joint begins to dislocate. However, instead of the joint surfaces completely losing contact, a subluxation can be considered a “partial dislocation.” Subluxations are often the result of a traumatic or acute injury and can be quite painful. Subluxations may lead to damage of the normal structures that support a joint.

Subluxations can also occur as a result of loose joints. In patients with generalized joint laxity, the body may allow for joint subluxations without any trauma or injury. These patients often have no symptoms and may not need any treatment for joint subluxations. If these joint subluxations become symptomatic, treatment may be recommended.

How Can Chiropractic Care Help?

Your chiropractor can use many different techniques to relieve pain, including pressure, massage, and manipulation (adjustments) of the vertebrae and joints. He or she may also order X-rays or an MRI to confirm a diagnosis. Your chiropractor will not prescribe medications, but will recommend treatment courses like therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises and nutritional and lifestyle counseling to help the body promote self-healing.

Chiropractors believe one of the main causes of back or neck pain is subluxation. Subluxation occurs when your vertebrae become misaligned. Treating subluxations can help to alleviate pain associated with a myriad of conditions, including:

  • Headaches
  • Sciatica
  • Trauma, such as whiplash
  • Scoliosis
  • Leg pain
  • Sports injuries
  • Bursitis and tendonitis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Spinal arthritis (spondylosis)
